Alfred Fellheimer and Steward Wagner, the well-known architects for urban railway station designing, wee hired for the purpose. The constriction and improvements in the area began in 1928, though the construction of the terminal building started in 1931. Finally, the station was officially opened on March 31, 1933.

The station served well during the World War II but went on a decline in the 1950s through the 60s. Creation of Amtrak and building up of interstates and airlines further led to the reduction in the station's significance. As a result, the passenger train service was discontinued in 1972.
